Moroccan Henna Designs Biography

Kenzi traces her passion for henna to the time she spent living and working in Morocco. Her years in North Africa and elsewhere throughout the world have instilled in her a sincere appreciation for diverse cultures, arts, traditions and history. A self-taught professional henna artist, Kenzi is currently working on a book of her original henna art as well as a book celebrating the rich henna tradition of Morocco, due out in Fall 2009. By revealing techniques, recipes, designs, myths and history, Kenzi seeks to rescue from obscurity this ancient women’s art form. Her love of Moroccan design is reflected in her henna work into which she also incorporates contemporary as well as traditional influences from other cultures including Indian, Pakistani, Persian among others. While Kenzi’s work is deeply rooted in these traditions, it is also entirely modern, often referred to as NeoFusion.

Kenzi’s experience as a henna artist is as vast as her influences. Perhaps you have seen her work in the movies (Spike Lee’s “The 25th Hour” and Jonathan Demme’s “The Manchurian Candidate) or on MTV (Erykah Badu’s video for “Love of my Life”). Kenzi has also created original pieces for photo shoots and fashion shows. Kenzi works at large-scale corporate events and festivals (such as Bulgari, HBO and Le Tigre), as well as intimate weddings, parties and private consultations. She also teaches the art of henna in workshops around New York City.

Kenzi is the President of a not-for-profit organization, HennaTribe (hennatribe.com), an artist owned collective of international, professional mehndi artists and suppliers promoting natural henna, started in September 2004. Their mission is to provide an online community, informational resource, and professional network for anyone interested in the ancient art of applying henna to skin.

Kenzi (aka Lisa Butterworth) traces her passion for henna to the time she spent living and working in Morocco. Her travels throughout Morocco and elsewhere in the world have instilled in her a deep curiosity and appreciation for cultures, arts, traditions, and history. A self-taught professional henna artist, Kenzi’s love of Moroccan design is reflected in her henna work, into which she also incorporates traditional and contemporary influences from other cultures. While Kenzi’s style is deeply rooted in tradition, it is also entirely modern, often referred to as “psychedelic amoeba.” Kenzi’s experience is as vast as her influences. Her work has been seen in films (Spike Lee’s The 25th Hour; Jonathan Demme’s The Manchurian Candidate), on television (Erykah Badu’s MTV video “Love of my Life”), in magazines (a spread on Global Beauty for Brides Magazine), and on the runway. She works at large-scale corporate events and festivals (Bulgari, HBO, A&E TV, New York University, Whole Foods Market, Diabetes Research Institute, Committee to Support Rural Education for Girls in Morocco (“CSSF”)) as well as intimate weddings and parties. Kenzi also offers private consultations and teaches the art of henna in workshops throughout New York City. Her motto is “crisscrossing the NYC grid hennaing all bare skin.” Kenzi is the author, along with Nic Tharpa Cartier, of the first ever book on Moroccan henna, "Moor: A Henna Atlas of Morocco" and is currently lecturing across the country and around the world on the subject of Moroccan henna. She and Nic are starting work on their next project.
